Food Diary

Enter the diary … my day-by-day log of everything I’m cooking and eating from scratch. It’s a way for me to stay honest, but it’s also designed to help me assess how much time and money I put into this once the experiment it’s over. I’d like to have an informed answer to the question, “So, was it worth it?”

DAY 1 – August 10
Breakfast: Steel cut oatmeal
Lunch: Couscous & zucchini
Snack: Fruit & homemade cookie
Dinner: Chili

DAY 2 – August 11
Breakfast: Irish oatmeal
Lunch: Leftover couscous & zucchini
Snack: Fruit & homemade cookie
Dinner: Lentils, rice, yogurt, & paneer w/peppers

DAY 3 – August 12
Breakfast: Eggs & fruit
Lunch: Leftover chili
Snack: Fruit & veggies
Dinner: Hot pot (broth, veggies, & meat)

DAY 4 – August 13
Breakfast: Yogurt & fruits
Lunch: Leftover lentils & rice
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Lentils, rice, & veggies

DAY 5 – August 14 (NJ/NY)
Breakfast: Peas & fruit
Lunch: Homemade chaat (think Indian nachos)
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Khichdi, papadum, & yogurt

DAY 6 – August 15 (NJ/NY)
Breakfast: Peas & fruit
Lunch: Homemade parathas & veggies
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Figs, homemade Mexican food

N/A – August 16 (Wedding in NY)
N/A – August 17 (Traveling from NJ to SEA)

DAY 7 – August 18
Breakfast: Fruit, yogurt, & honey
Lunch: Leftover Indian food from NJ
Snack: Fruit (and bag of not-from-scratch jelly beans at work … oops!)
Dinner: Homemade Taiwanese dinner at Jeff’s

DAY 8 – August 19
Breakfast: Oatmeal
Lunch: Leftover Indian food from NJ
Snack: Fruit (and M&Ms … just a few … oops again!)
Dinner: Fajitas (grilled peppers/onions, rotis/tortillas, mango salsa)

DAY 9 – August 20
Breakfast: Oatmeal & berries
Lunch: Leftover Indian food from NJ
Snack: Fruit (and M&Ms … AGAIN … I need to learn how to make chocolate)
Dinner: Pizza and salad

DAY 10 – August 21
Breakfast: Oatmeal
Lunch: Leftover Indian food from NJ
Snack: Fruit (and a teeny, tiny, harmless bit of chocolate … d’oh!)
Dinner: Leftover pizza and salad

DAY 11 – August 22
Breakfast: Mango (yes, that’s it)
Lunch: Leftover pizza and salad (starting to get sick of it…)
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Shepherd’s pie, salad, and berry shortcake

DAY 12 – August 23
Breakfast: Fruit salad
Lunch: Eggs, yogurt, and ginger compote
Snack: Fruit (and another piece of chocolate … I have a problem)
Dinner: Leftover pizza and salad (the last portion … officially sick of it)

DAY 13 – August 24
Breakfast: Oatmeal with berries
Lunch: Egg salad on challah
Snack: Fruit, yogurt, and honey (and a not-so-natural popsicle … argh!)
Dinner: Salmon, mango salsa, peppers, and fresh bread & butter

DAY 14 – August 25
Breakfast: Oatmeal with berries
Lunch: Egg salad on challah
Snack: Fruit, yogurt, and honey (and a homemade mango lassi popsicle)
Dinner: Boeuf bourguignon (a la Julia Child) by my friend Margaret

DAY 15 – August 26
Breakfast: Oatmeal with berries
Lunch: Brown rice and stir-fried peppers & onions
Snack: Fruit & homemade fudge
Dinner: Challah & butter, veggies & dip, and tomatoes & pesto (thanks Amy!)

DAY 16 – August 27
Breakfast: Yogurt with berries
Lunch: Brown rice and stir-fried broccoli & sugar snap peas
Snack: Fruit & carrots
Dinner: Zucchini, brown rice, salmon, salad, and strawberry shortcake!

DAY 17 – August 28
Breakfast: Steel cut oats with blueberries
Lunch: Brown rice and zucchini in tomato reduction
Snack: Fruit & carrots
Dinner: Meatloaf, broccoli, and chocolate (argh, chocolate will be my downfall!)

Day 18 – August 29
Breakfast: Um, not up early enough
Lunch: Scrambled eggs & challah french toast
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Salad and, well, a supplement of lamb chops … at a restaurant …  In my defense, I was actually anemic and felt like I was going to pass out at a very important event for Jeff.

FAIL – August 30
Breakfast: Um, not up early enough … again.
Lunch: Brunch … at a restaurant … FAIL!!  Again, it was a very important event for Jeff that I didn’t want to miss.
Snack: Fruit & yogurt
Dinner: Homemade chili — but I still plan on making up this day at the end, too.  Oops.

DAY 19 – August 31
Breakfast: Oatmeal & berries
Lunch: Leftover chili
Snack: Fruit & carrot sticks
Dinner: Hand-spun noodles (no, not made by me …)

DAY 20 – September 1
Breakfast: Steel cut oats
Lunch: Leftover chili
Snack: Fruit & carrot sticks
Dinner: Indian feast & strawberry shortcake

DAY 21 – September 2
Breakfast: Steel cut oats
Lunch: Leftovers from the Indian feast
Snack: Fruit & carrot sticks
Dinner: Leftover chili

DAY 22 – September 3

Lunch: Parathas (stuffed Indian flatbreads) with potatoes & scallions
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Yet another Indian feast

DAY 23 – September 4

Lunch: Woke up late, so I had to buy soup … FAIL
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Went to a surprise dinner for Jeff … ruined the surprise AND I ate sushi.  DOUBLE FAIL!

DAY 27 – September 16

Lunch: Leftover roast chicken
Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Coq au vin & plum cobbler

FAIL – September 17
Breakfast: Oatmeal & fruit

Dinner: Grilled cheese … at a bar … they had Patrick Swayze trivia, I couldn’t resisit!!

Lunch: Soup (ack, I didn’t have enough time to pack lunch!)

Dinner: Sichuanese food (I failed lunch, so why not?)

DAY 28 – September 19
Breakfast: N/A (feeling gross from the Sichuanese food, oops)

Snack: Fruit
Dinner: Lamb tagine & plum cobbler

Lunch: Mexican food (the restaurant was right next to the kayak club … I couldn’t resist!)
